I rarely blog at night anymore. Back in the day, a lot of blogging happened at night when people finally sat down and kicked up their feet from the day. These days, my main blogging hours are from 8:00 am to noon, yet tonight I felt hitting the keyboard. The boys are asleep and the house is quiet. And for some reason, I’m not overly sleepy like I typically am this time of night.
I’m watching The Great Gatsby. The old school version with Mia Farrow and Robert Redford. The Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird were my favorite books in high school. I think the last time I watched this movie was in high school after we read the novel. It’s certainly a strange flick, but I like it. I don’t think my fifteen-year old self had enough life experience to understand all the innuendos and appreciate the dark and coyly scandalous plot. And Robert Redford is so dashing. And Mia Farrow is so young. Oh, and how I love the 1920s costumes, music and the hairstyles. Dance the Charleston, anyone? I would have totally enjoyed life during this era.
So, I’ve started running again and it feels amazing. I once blogged all the time about my running adventures. A couple years ago, I set a goal to run one race every month, and I did a pretty good job of it. I didn’t meet my goal entirely, but I ran a number of races in one year, including a half marathon. Then after being involved in a couple wrecks, I just completely stopped running and working out. I’m finally back at it. I started running hard core again about three weeks ago. And on the days I don’t run, I do HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts at my house. Today I ran a little over four miles. It’s the most I’ve ran in ages and it actually felt really good. In the past, I just sort of haphazardly trained for races. This time, I’m doing it the right way. I’m going to register for a 10K and then use an actual training schedule. I’ve just got to stay in the groove. I’m feeling really energized, so I think I can do it.
My dad’s having a big yard sale on Saturday, and we’re offering a bunch of items to sell. He has always loved flea markets and yard sales. I’m not a huge fan. I don’t like all the haggling and price bargaining. My eight-year old, Brooks, loves that kind of thing. I’ve decided Brooks can help my dad with the selling and I’ll help Case, my five-year old, with his lemonade stand. Nevertheless, I’m excited about it and think it will be fun. Perhaps we’ll make at least a little money.
School starts in a little over two weeks which is so hard to believe. Brooks is going into third grade and Case starts kindergarten. It’s mind blowing they’ll both be in elementary. I can’t imagine little Case walking around the same school as his big brother. These two sweet boys and I have had a fun summer, but I think I’m about ready for the steady flow of the school year. We all, even the big people, do better when there’s a little structure to our week.
It’s getting late. I’ve gotta sign off so I can get up and run early tomorrow. I hope you’re having a fantastic week and embracing these last fleeting weeks of summer!
