Are your weekday mornings obnoxiously chaotic? Ours certainly are. It’s hard to fit breakfast into our crazy routine, but we know what an essential and nutritious meal it is, so we make it happen one way or another.
Before our boys were born, I would just throw a granola bar in my purse and my husband would skip breakfast all together. Once we had children, however, we knew breakfast had to become a priority, but we rarely have time to sit down to an actual meal before heading out the door.
When mornings are chaotic and rushed, we often opt for a breakfast smoothie as opposed to cereal, oatmeal, or any other option. I like making smoothies at home because I know exactly what’s going in them. Not only are smoothies quick and simple, but making smoothies is a great way to use all of that fruit that’s on the verge of going bad.
One of our most favorite and easy-to-make smoothie is our Berry Banana Smoothie. Jam packed with nutrients and healthy ingredients, you can’t wrong with this delicious and easy smoothie recipe.
6 ice cubes
1 cup milk (almond, soy, cow, etc.)
1/2 cup yogurt (we use low fat organic vanilla)
1/2 cup blueberries
5 medium/large strawberries (cut up)
1/2 ripe banana
I add the ingredients in this order:
- Fruit (blueberries, banana, strawberries)
Blend well (to blend the smoothie, you can use either a standard blender or an immersion blender).
I always serve my boys’ smoothies in cups with lids and straws. Whenever we eat out and their drinks come in a relatively durable plastic cup with a lid and straw, I keep them to use for smoothies later on.
Though children seem to like the simplicity of fruit, milk, and yogurt, I often add more complex ingredients to make my smoothie more filling and/or nutritious. Below are some of the optional ingredients I use in my own smoothies.
- Protein powder (one scoop)
- Ground flax seed (1 tablespoon)
- Coconut water (1/4 cup)
I’ll do anything to lessen the nervous breakdowns that could so easily happen in the mornings. Not only do smoothies take very little time to make, but my boys love them and ask for them daily. It’s a win-win for everyone!
